Spending time in natural 'blue spaces' at our coasts, rivers and lakes benefits our physical and mental health.
Explore the wellness benefits of water and natural spaces with me, Lucinda the Lensomy Lifestylist, as I visit them daily to remain connected and aware of the seasonal changes within and beyond nature, of which we are a part.
If you feel disconnected from your surroundings and are reading these words, know that you are not alone. This is why I am now inviting individual participants to join me in this healing space I call Home Sweet Home.
If you have ever fallen asleep to the sound of the sea or been brave enough to skinny dip, you would have witnessed the positive effects of being in and around water. From the ancient Greeks to the puritanical Victorians both knew of the benefits of soaking in mineral rich sea water. Now it's been confirmed by a body of science-led evidence that proves wild waters can indeed heal.
Here are a few pointers on how to ride the wave of 'blue therapy' and find the real 'YOU'!
Embrace The Blue
The term "blue space" is often used to refer to our seas, rivers ,lakes, ponds, streams and waterfalls but also includes the sky!
Looking up can physically and emotionally reset your nervous system.
Scanning the skies rather than scrolling the internet is a wonderful practice to incorporate in your morning rituals and again just before bedtime which brings a warm wave of gratitude that benefits both the heart and mind. Research is increasingly showing how these 'blue spaces' can help us physically and psychologically reduce stress as well as building stronger communities.
Addressing loneliness, now one of society's major issues, is also aided by our shared composition of over 60 percent water. This connection through water helps alleviate feelings of isolation, as individuals with similar interests find solace in the vastness of the blue, whether it involves getting more than your feet wet or admiring from dry land!
We all understand the benefits associated with exercise such as improved cardiovascular health, combating osteoporosis and endorphin releases but the happy hormones, serotonin and dopamine rise when moving on, in or around water under a big sky. Studies show that swimming in natural water super charged by solar power from the sun and moon may help with digestive issues and menopause symptoms. Cold water stimulates the vagus nerve in the body and this can induce an anti inflammatory response!
Lensomy Rejuvenation Retreats
Solar participants who visit our Dorset coastline discover the wellbeing benefits of the sea in a safe non judgemental space.
I see people arrive anxious and stressed by the daily pressures of city life and the digital world in doing not being mode. Stepping into 'blue space' enables them to slow down, breathe and awaken their senses, connecting to their true nature by being in natural light. When we lean into the sounds of nature from sunrise to sunset and experience the ebb and flow of the tides and light we come home to ourselves.
Feeling the earth's temperature under our bare feet, with the shingle stimulating our soles and sand nestled between our toes, helps us ground ourselves and feel tranquil and secure. Our fight or flight response diminishes, and our nervous system relaxes as we inhale the fresh, salty air, which serves as the best aid for sleep.
The outcome is always positive. Busy minds will naturally calm down without effort, allowing you to have real, hands-on experiences not influenced by technology. These inspirational moments can be stored in your memory and revisited whenever you feel overwhelmed at the office, workplace, or on dry land.
