Rain or shine this Sunday: pantry grazing, Morrish & Banham wines, postal Lardy cakes, and local doorstep delivery.

An honest note from the counter (+ Sunday wine, cheese grazing, postal cakes & local deliveries)

Dear Friends,

Let’s be completely honest for a moment.

If you’ve walked into the shop over the past week, you will have noticed our veg counter isn't its usual bursting self. Between unpredictable weather and empty fields waiting on the next growth cycle, local fresh produce is scarce right now. Add to that the pinch everyone is feeling on household budgets and the price of petrol keeping people close to home, and the village till has been distinctly quiet.

Running an independent rural farm shop in times like these is a real act of faith. Small community hubs don’t survive on fresh air alone—they survive because neighbours and friends choose to lean in. We never want to sound alarmist, but the simple truth of the countryside is: use your independent shops, or one day they won’t be there.

Whether you live half a mile away down the lane or hundreds of miles away reading this online, we are digging deep, adapting, and finding ways to bring comfort, good food, and warmth to you.

Here is what is happening this week.

This Sunday: Wine, Cheese & Farmhouse Grazing (Rain or Shine!)

We aren’t letting a bit of moody autumn weather dampen our spirits.

Our Alfresco Sunday Gathering on the 25th Oct is going ahead! If the weather holds, we’ll be out in the yard catching the fresh air from 10am to 4pm. But if the heavens open, we are doing something even better: we will clear the floor, pull tables together inside, and turn the farm shop into a warm, buzzing, intimate tasting room.

Think of it as an open farmhouse feast, bringing our best larder shelves straight to your table:

  • Wine & Cheese Tasting: The brilliant Caroline and Mark from Morrish & Banham Wine Merchants will be here pouring extraordinary bottles, paired up with generous tastings of our favourite farmhouse cheeses. Pull up a chair and get up close with people who truly know their craft.

  • The Modbury Ploughman’s: A proper, hearty plate stacked with thick wedges of local cheese, crackers, savoury bites, and traditional chutneys.

  • Pantry Nibbles & Grazing: Bowls of plump marinated olives, artisan crisps, savoury dips, crackers, and delicious deli treats plucked right off our shelves to pick at while you chat.

  • Cakes & Steaming Mugs: Thick slices of homemade bakes, fresh hot coffee, and velvety mugs of rich hot chocolate to wrap cold hands around.

It is all about good conversation, zero pretension, and sharing a table together surrounded by the shelves.

In the Post: Pure Homely Comfort (Delivered UK-Wide)

To our many friends who receive this newsletter across the country: you don’t need to be in the village to support our makers. We have two incredible bakes leaving our counter by post this week:

  • Evershot Bakery Lardy Cakes: Proper, sticky, spiced, old-school bakery perfection. These legendary cakes from Evershot Bakery are flying out in parcels across the UK right now. They are pure nostalgia in a box—warm a slice under the grill with a cup of tea, and everything feels right with the world.

  • Village Gluten-Free Bakes (Pre-Order Only):Made right here in the village by our talented local baker Kim, these gluten-free cakes are utterly delicious, rich, and never dry. They have been selling out off the shelf almost the moment they arrive, so we are now taking weekly pre-orders for postal delivery or shop collection.

Want a cake sent to your door (or to a friend who needs a comforting treat)?

Simply reply directly to this email or drop us a message to secure your bake for this week’s postal run.

For Our Locals: Introducing Doorstep Delivery

We know that petrol is dear, time is short, and getting out on the roads isn't always easy. We don't want that to mean you miss out on your daily essentials or weekly comforts.

We are officially rolling out Modbury Local Deliveries.

If you can’t make it up to the farm shop, let the farm shop come to you. From daily essentials and pantry goods to fresh bakes, cheeses, and wine, we will drop your order right to your doorstep.

  • How to order: Reply directly to this email lensomy3@gmail.com or give us a ring at the shop on 07514614231 with your list. Tell us what you need, and we’ll arrange a drop-off day with you. Or visit our  Personal Shopping Page

Times may feel tight and the weather a bit grey, but the kettle is always close at hand, the shelves are stocked with makers who care, and the welcome is as warm as ever.

Thank you for backing independent food, local bakers, and our little corner of the world.

With love and gratitude,

Lucinda & Tim
